SCANNED SKETCHBOOK PAGES
When I started working in these sketchbooks in 2007, I was in the middle of the Tower series, which had a limited palette and subtle color shifts. Since I was primarily interested in exploring line and perspective, pencil was all I needed. Then, when I moved into the Beacon paintings, I started to think about color. Colored pencil was too tedious and paint took too long to dry, so I started cutting up old art magazines, which have incredibly rich, glossy color. Although I wasn’t initially interested in incorporating text, I like the way addresses, dates, artist names, and gallery info all place the collages within a specific time period.
My process has always been slow and deliberate, but in the sketchbooks I take a casual, anything-goes approach. Eventually I wanted to bring that kind of acceptance into the new paintings. Sometimes I copy directly from specific sketchbook pages, but more often the paintings are composites of visual ideas culled from different pages.
